Support to Ethnic Elderly (SEE) Project

Support to Ethnic Elderly (SEE) Project

Introduction

Regarding to a steady rise and continuous ageing trend in the population of ethnic minorities (EMs) in Hong Kong, their needs of using various mainstream elderly services increase simultaneously. Owing to language and cultural differences, EM elders and their care-givers encounter difficulties in accessing to local culture, various social systems and social service information, in which impede them to obtain appropriate social services. Meanwhile, their insufficient understanding on needs of EM elders, makes the existing service providers inadequate to address to the unique needs.

Therefore, Hong Kong Christian Service funded by the Community Chest, has launched “Support to Ethnic Elderly (SEE)” Project in April, 2019. The project aims at facilitating social inclusion of EM elders in Hong Kong, supporting their care-givers and mainstream elderly service providers. The project also promotes the connection among EM elders, their care-givers and the mainstream elderly service providers. Our objectives include:

  1. To enhance EM elders’ knowledge to access to public services;
  2. To strengthen EM elders’ social support networks in the community;
  3. To enhance cultural competence of mainstream elderly service providers in serving EM elders;
  4. To improve capacities of the care-givers of EM elders;
  5. To promote community’s awareness and concern about EM elders.
