Hong Kong Christian Service Launches 'CarerPlus Good Living Festival'
- Carers of the elderly join the bus parade and 'Run-Carer-Run Club' to inspire public support.
- 'CarerPlus Good Living Story Gallery' debuts, showcasing carers' stories with audio narrations by Serrini and Ho Cheuk-tin.
On 20 March, the International Day of Happiness, Hong Kong Christian Service (HKCS) hosted the 'CarerPlus Good Living Festival', a citywide event aimed at uplifting carers and promoting a more carer-friendly community. To spread the message of 'Good Life, Good Relationships, and Good Community', the festival introduced a series of engaging activities and marked the official launch of the online and offline carer story platform. 'Good Life' encourages carers to prioritise their own physical and mental well-being, ensuring they live a life of quality and dignity; 'Good Relationships' fosters empathy and understanding between carers and their loved ones, promoting mutual respect and healthier dynamics; 'Good Community' calls on everyone to join forces in creating an inclusive, supportive environment for carers.
During the festival, different activities across multiple districts were held, attracting over 200 participants. Carers took part in a community bus parade around Kwun Tong and Cheung Sha Wan to enjoy their community from a fresh perspective and escape from the stress of daily routines. Meanwhile, the carer-formed running group ‘Run-Carer-Run Club’ organised a night run to release emotional and physical stress and raise public awareness about the unseen struggles of carers.
Ms Yu Sin-mui, a 65-year-old carer who looks after her 75-year-old husband, shared her journey. Overwhelmed by the weight of caregiving, she once felt lost. With HKCS's support, she gradually found a healthier balance. She reflected, 'Prolonged caregiving responsibilities made me easily irritated, and I nearly lost hope in life. The festival reminded me to take care of myself and live well. It also helped me learn how to communicate better with my husband and explore harmony in our relationship. More importantly, I now realise there's a community that understands and supports us. We're not alone. I hope other carers give themselves a break and society continues to show empathy and support for us.'
A major highlight of the event was launching the 'CarerPlus Good Living Story Gallery' website (Chinese version only), a collection of real-life carer stories. HKCS invited singer Serrini, director Ho Cheuk-tin, YouTuber Joey, and singer Jesley Lok to narrate these touching stories alongside carers. Beyond the digital experience, from now until 11 April, HKCS is partnering with local businesses to set up 'CarerPlus Good Living Story Gallery' pop-ups across Hong Kong, bringing these powerful stories directly into the community.
Ms Yan Lai-ming Jenny, Assistant Director (Elderly) of the Social Welfare Department, congratulated on the initiative, 'The carer story platform shares heartfelt carer stories to build empathy, foster support, and help the public understand carers’ challenges. This festival connects people, reminding carers they are not alone on this journey. I extend my deepest thanks and respect to all carers — your dedication is not only a source of strength for your loved ones but also an essential pillar in building a more compassionate, inclusive society.'
Ms Cheung Yin-lam Bonnie, Coordinator, Active Ageing & Community Care Service, HKCS, said, 'Every carer's story matters. Each experience deserves to be heard and respected. Through the message of "Good Life, Good Relationships, and Good Community", we encourage carers to care for their own well-being while nurturing positive relationships with their loved ones. Carers and elders should support and grow together. We also urge the wider community to join us in building a carer-friendly society.'
